5 men from South Yorkshire were found guilty of blackmail offences totalling £166,200.
Throughout 2011 this organised crime group travelled throughout the North of England offering to carry out repairs and resurfacing work to car parks and driveways belonging to both private companies and members of the public.
Claiming to be from a legitimate business called “RTS” and “RTS South Yorkshire”. The group offered to provide quality work and competitive prices. The work they produced was of poor quality and once the work had been competed the price was significantly inflated.
When customers refused to pay they were subject to threats of violence either over the telephone and by personal visits by the group. The threats made were of particular appalling nature and were not just against the individual, but also their partners, families and property.
During a substantive trail at Newcastle Crown Court evidence was heard from 13 victims who had faced demands of money totalling £166,200. 9 of the victims had made payments to the blackmailers totalling £61,850.
