The Regional Special Operations Unit (NERSOU) Fraud Team keep up the pressure on fraudsters in South Shields with a further male being charged with money laundering yesterday. The investigation centres around suspects from the South Shields area who have been involved in organised fraud targeting elderly people and defrauding them of their life’s savings and a year long investigation has now seen 7 males and a female being charged, and 1 male has already pleaded guilty at court.

The investigation has highlighted that the fraudsters are targeting foreign students for their bank accounts to move the money through in order to disguise the original source of the fraudulent funds.

Detective Sergeant Jen Milsom from NERSOU’s fraud team, said “There has been a lot of media coverage recently about fraud and scammers and we are working hard to ensure that they are prevented from targeting the North East for victims or mule account holders.”
