On Mon 26 Jan 15, Jon Neill a 33 year old unemployed male from the Huyton area of Merseyside was sentenced to 10 years imprisonment at Durham Crown Court for possession of Cocaine with intent to supply.
Neill was arrested by Durham police officers on Wed 5 Nov 14 whilst driving a Volvo motor vehicle along the southbound A1 between the Northumbria and Durham police areas. A subsequent search of the vehicle driven by Neill resulted in the recovery of 7 kilos of high purity of cocaine with a street value of approximately £950,000 together with £80,000 in cash.
Detective Inspector Warren Hawes, who led the operation said: "Today's significant court result highlights to criminals the risks associated with those people who choose to traffic controlled drugs into the north east region. All 3 local police forces are committed to targeting those people involved in the supply of controlled drugs together with other serious and organised crime. Drugs not only blight our local communities but also ruin the lives of loved ones and close family members associated with those persons who traffic drugs. I would encourage residents across our region to continue reporting suspicious or criminal activity to their respective police force in order that rigorous enforcement action can be taken."
